Dermabrasion - September 4th, 2009

Once the actual acne is gone, it can leave a reminder of its existence. Teens and adults who have significant scarring may look into ways to lessen the appearance. There are many advertised creams and procedures available for just that purpose; however, effectiveness varies.

Dermabrasion is one method people have used to remove acne scars. This procedure involves the surgical scraping of the top layer of skin. It is most effective in the treatment of shallow scars and can cost $1500 per treatment. It is not recommended to be performed on patients with active acne at the site to be treated.

Dermabrasion is to be used with caution in those with dark complexions as it may cause discoloration at the site of treatment. This treatment may also remove freckles which are in the treatment area; so, if you like your freckles, you may want to think twice.

There may be discomfort and swelling immediately after the procedure. As the treatment site heals, you may experience some itching, formation of small whiteheads and sensitivity. Your doctor will provide specific aftercare instructions which will include signs and symptoms that require immediate medical attention.

Be advised, this procedure does not produce immediate results. It may take several weeks for there to be noticeable improvement. This procedure may also require that you wait two weeks before returning to normal daily activities, such as returning to work.
